Tokens of a Time Gone By offers a unique perspective on the London Biennale’s theme of ‘maps, mazes and mysteries’ (2014). This multi-media exhibition by Noel Ed De Leon calls on viewers to explore how they map out personal and family stories using material objects. De Leon seeks out tokens of the past which linger in households world-wide – photographs, out-dated kitchen equipment, old recording devices, personal trinkets and family memorials, to name but a few – re-combining these items into contemporary multi-media installations. The new associations set up between objects in his installations hint at the complex, at times contradictory, relationship between family accounts and grander, national histories of creativity, migration, conflict, and religion.
On Saturday, 21st June, the artist will stage the international premier of his performance artwork ‘Tracing the Traces.’ We cordially invite you to attend this performance, which will be followed by a curator’s tour, presenting De Leon’s collection and assemblage practices in greater detail.
As a part of the closing of the London Biennale 2014, De Leon’s exhibition will be the venue for an interactive artists’ talk organized by David Medalla and Adam Nankervis. Artists from Asia, Latin America, Africa and Europe, will speak live and via skype on the subject of ‘creative travels and encounters.’
